Rug Cleaning & Restoration for Asheville Homes

Persian, oriental, wool and silk — washed by hand, repaired by hand.

Asheville sits above two thousand feet in the Blue Ridge, and rugs here fail for reasons that have very little to do with anyone walking on them. Summers are too mild to make the air conditioning run, so nothing indoors dries out. Lower floors are cut into the hill. Wood heat lays soot into the pile all winter and then dries the room out hard. Rugs are collected, washed off site by hand, dried flat, and brought back.

Fine Rug Care

One Rug at a Time, Matched to Its Fibre

A hand-knotted Heriz and a polypropylene flatweave off a shelf are not the same object, and they should never meet the same brush. Vegetable dyes bleed. Silk scorches under heat. Cotton foundations shrink if they are pulled out of the wash wet and dried under tension. Guessing is how rugs get ruined.

So nothing gets cleaned until it has been looked over: fibre content, dye stability, weave construction, backing, previous repairs, and whatever a run of cool damp mountain summers and wood-heated winters has left in the foundation. Only then does the rug get a method. That inspection costs nothing, it happens before you commit to anything, and if a rug is not worth the cost of cleaning we will say so.

Fibre-Matched Washing

Wool, silk, cotton, jute and synthetics each get their own water temperature, pH and agitation.

Repairs & Reweaving

Chewed corners, unravelling fringe, moth grazing and split foundations rebuilt by hand.

Damp, Soot & Odour

The cupboard smell in a lower-level room is treated in the foundation, not scented over.

Collection & Delivery

We collect and return across Buncombe and Henderson counties. You never lift a roll.

What We Do

Our Services

Washing, structural repair, and getting water back out of a rug before it becomes a mould problem.

Rug Cleaning

Full immersion hand-washing for Persian, oriental, wool, silk, cotton and modern synthetic rugs. Dry grit and ash come out before any water is introduced, then the rug is washed, flushed until the water runs clear, and dried flat under moving air.

Repair & Restoration

Fringe replacement, edge binding, moth damage, hearth burns, pet destruction, worn pile and missing corners. Reweaving is done with matched wool at matched knot density, so the repair settles into the field instead of announcing itself.

Flood & Water Damage

River water in a bottom-land house, a hillside that pushed through a basement wall, or a supply line that let go upstairs. Rugs in that state need flushing and controlled drying, not a fan pointed at them. We extract, decontaminate, dry flat, and document throughout.

What These Mountains Do to a Rug

Rug care advice written for a hot, flat, air-conditioned place does not transfer up here. Asheville sits at about two thousand one hundred and thirty feet, where the French Broad and the Swannanoa meet, and the climate is genuinely different from the rest of the state: the July daily average is under seventy-four degrees, the city sees an average of nine afternoons a year that reach ninety, and close to fifty inches of rain falls spread through the year rather than dumped in one season. It is comfortable weather. It is also weather that never dries a house out.

  • A summer too mild to dehumidify. An air conditioner only pulls water out of the air while it is running, and in a mountain summer it hardly runs. That is why a house can be pleasant to sit in and still hold a rug at a humidity it cannot dry at for four months.
  • Lower floors cut into the slope. Half the good rugs in this county are on a level with earth against three walls. That wall is a moisture source in every season, and the room has no way to answer it.
  • Wood heat, working both ways. Six months of woodsmoke and fine ash settle into the pile and grey the whole field evenly, so it reads as age rather than soil. The same heat then drives indoor humidity down hard, and a foundation that spent the summer swollen contracts.
  • Leaf litter and mountain grit. Wet leaves carry tannin, which stains brown and sets. Underneath them is angular, mica-flecked soil off gravel drives and steep shoulders, which works down to the knots and cuts from below.
  • River bottoms that flood. The French Broad and the Swannanoa have done it in 1916, again in 2004, and at record levels in September 2024. Flood water is not clean water, so a rug that took it is a decontamination job rather than a drying one.

Flood Water, Hillside Seepage & Cellar Damp

Some of the soaked rugs in this county met a river. Most of them met something smaller: a hillside that pushed through a basement wall after a wet week, a gutter that gave up on a steep roof, a supply line behind a washing machine, or a pipe that froze on the north side of the house in January. Water that starts clean rarely stays clean, because it crosses a slab or a crawlspace to get to the rug.

River water is its own category. Helene put record levels down the French Broad and the Swannanoa in September 2024, and the 2004 remnants of Frances and Ivan flooded Biltmore Village before that. Water like that has crossed roads, yards, garages and fuel tanks on the way in. Either way, what matters is what happens next. A wet wool foundation is a growing medium, and drying the surface with a fan leaves the contamination in the base of the pile and produces a rug that seems fine for a few weeks and then does not. The rug has to be flushed, treated, and dried flat with the moisture content actually measured — and photographed before any of that, because that is what an insurer will ask for.

  • Wet rugs are run ahead of routine work where the schedule allows
  • Full-immersion decontamination flush, not surface drying
  • Silt, sediment and antimicrobial treatment front and back
  • Controlled flat drying with moisture readings taken to completion
  • Dye-bleed correction and reweaving of rotted areas
  • Photo documentation for insurance claims
